IUOE is one of the Charter Members of the AFL/CIO
dating from 1895. It presently has some 500,000
members in the United States and Canada, its Headquarters
Office is located in Washington, D.C. It has two
distinct types of membership: the “operating
engineer” locals- which are principally
the “outside construction” members,
they operate all of the various types of equipment
used for moving earth- Tractors, Loaders, Plows,
Power Shovels, - for preparing roads, freeways,
airports, home development sites, etc.; The second
type is the “stationary engineer locals”-
which are principally the “inside”
engineers- heating, ventilating, air conditioning
- construction, maintenance and repair in factories,
hotels, office buildings and the like.
A “Local” is a chartered sub-division
of the International Union, a Local is given a
charter by the International Union to organize
and represent all employees within industry in
the specialty for which they are trained. The
Charter specifies the “jurisdiction”,
that is, the geographic region for which they
have exclusive rights to organize and represent.
